The earliest reference to the term Purana in an inscription is dated to approximately 300 BC. This is the famous Sindhu-Sandal Inscription of the king Pravarasena II, the successor of Pravarasena I, and previously the ruler of the kingdom of Gandhara. The inscription mentions the Bharat Purana and the Shatapatha Brahmana (a commentary on the Veda). There is no reference to the Katha or Ramayana in this inscription, and it is not certain whether the term Purana is used in any context other than the Shatapatha Brahmana commentary. The term appears first in the title of the Shatapatha Brahmana itself, and its first mention in an inscription is 300 BC.
The earliest dated Puranic manuscript in vernacular language (Tamil) is a 19th-century manuscript of the Harivamsa (Chapters 1-24) found in the Madurai library. It was written in the Tamil language and dated to 1300 AD. It contains both Sanskrit and Tamil manuscript texts. The Harivamsa 827ec27edc
