The first act of!Xiʼs journey is to travel across part of South Africa in a car with a Afrikaner zoologist. The zoologist has illegal immigrants on his trucks who work for him but he won't let them take any of his precious animals. The Afrikaners suffer the most in the film because of many other less complex and less of a focus issues they constantly face. For instance,!Xi's village is an example of extreme poverty where most of the villagers, including!Xi, only have one or two clothes. In top of the problem of poverty, people claim that the Kalahari Desert is very dry; for those living in San areas it is not uncommon for children to die of thirst because they cannot drink the local water, which comes from a wet salty spring. The people of the desert fight among themselves for what little water they have and are not very peaceful. They also have no electricity or running water. The second act of!Xi's journey is to go to a black township in South Africa. Here, the villagers are much worse off than the San people. They live in basic shacks without running water and have no supplies. The people of this place are members of the Xhosa minority in S.A. The minority is mostly made of blacks. However, they are not allowed to live near San villages and escape the harsh living and dying conditions of the Kalahari. This may be one of the main reasons for the unrest and confusion. The black townships are separated from the San by a large apartheid wall. Those living within the village areas are in the San Homelands, while the others are in the black townships. Given the fact that the Kalahari is the only water and food source in South Africa, the San have little reason to leave their homelands. Most small Afrikaans families have moved from the grasslands and have now settled in the townships. The Kalahari has always been a barren landscape, but the apartheid situation complicates things. The San must drive through the townships to get to the Kalahari or vice versa. Since the townships are also very rural, they are also forbidden from living with the Kalahari. Due to lack of water, they die out and live in shacks like those in the San areas. The water from the "civilized" world is the only thing that can save them and the only thing that can save the San is the San village. d2c66b5586
