Some backstory This album features more than 30 tracks of studio material from 1965 to 1967 and many more of live material. All of these have been culled from a CD he called "Egocide". Egocide means an alternative way of life : survival through an egocide of all egos, and self-realisation of the true self. This was Jimi's big discovery in 1967 and he emphasised it in all his performances at the time of his of his period in The Time. Jimi also felt that religion was the golden egg. Jimi saw The Beatles as his springboard as he wished to believe that they were as the Prophets of the God language. The only problem was that Jimi lacked the self control to curb his excesses. He wanted to be someone else - something outside of himself and this gnawed at his soul. At the same time he felt New England was a musically cultured place, not a culture of love. This in turn made him search for musicians like the Rolling Stones, Chicago, The Doors and others who rather than creating something new, wanted to explore the limits. Jimi was at times too overambitious, too visionary. However, it is what made him special. Playing the guitar he was a bad role model and he messed about. In his book, A Brief History of Time, his friend, Bobby Ascroft recounts how Jimi once challenged him to play Devil music with him and of course, got annoyed when Bobby told him that guitar playing was not about that. Jimi also clashed with the other Experience members, ever feeling that he was cool and the others were an uncool bunch. He sought the company of people like Eric Clapton and B.B. King, not someone like Mitch Mitchell. Jimi stayed in New York until the month-long US tour in mid-Sept, 1967. During that time he earned a living by playing on busses and filling in for other musicians. During this period Jimi's deep spiritual quest was about to come to a climax as he met a new stringer of Kirtan who changed the whole picture for him. Freedom, enlightenment, and understanding were what he craved. He has described aspects of this new guru as a trinity : Krishna (a calm, gentle, and simple being), Sri Babaji (a spiritual teacher with a unique teaching style) and Gandhiji (a guide who loves Americans). d2c66b5586
