Yes, there are a lot of butter chicken recipes out there. Yes, there are many other types of Indian Chicken curry recipes out there. But honestly? This Indian Butter Chicken recipe is easy, authentic, creamy, spicy, and delicious. Plus Instant Pot Curry saves you a ton of time.
I've seen so many Indian Instant Pot Butter Chicken recipes that have no butter, no cream but that call for cornstarch, onions (heresy, y'all, no onions for the love of all that's good), and coconut milk instead of cream, so I've decided it's time to fix that.
I also can't be bothered with recipes with multiple steps and marinated chicken two different ways in yogurt (like my chicken tikka masala) etc. Additionally, the thing that takes the longest in Indian cooking is making the sauce anyway.
3. This step is entirely optional--but very nifty. If you'd like to make basmati rice, or mashed cauliflower, you can cook them at the same time as the chicken for an easy Instant Pot recipe.
Both of these Instant Pot Indian recipes have similar ingredients but they do have distinctly different flavors. Butter chicken is a creamier, less spicy dish. Chicken Tikka Masala is more of a tomato flavored Indian chicken dish and can have more of a kick since it doesn't have as much dairy in the recipe to subdue the spice.
Delicious recipe! I did increased the spices by half as we love Indian dishes with a lot of flavor. I also used coconut milk instead of cream and doubled the amount of chicken so we could have leftovers. Served with a side of roasted veggies and cauliflower rice. Will definitely be making this again. Thank you!
Quick, easy, and healthy! This lighten-up Dairy-Free Indian Butter Chicken is gluten-free, paleo, and top 8 allergy-free! A delicious dinner recipe starting with a simple coconut yogurt marinade, then cooked right in a single skillet with a creamy tomato-based sauce!
An interesting take on butter chicken! Try it without the arrowroot starch. I think the consistency with the coconut milk should work well too! Butter chicken is perhaps an all time fav for most Indian food lovers. Good to have a non dairy option
My family loved this recipe! My only complaint is the sauce is too thin. My son suggested taking the chicken out of the pan after roasting in the oven & heating the sauce up on the stove & constantly stirring it with a slurry of corn starch until it thickens up!
I love this recipe so much!Does anyone know a good vegetarian alternative for the chicken thighs? Would tofu with veggie stock instead of chicken stock work? I want to make this for my friends but there are a few veggies in my group so I want to accommodate!
I had this recipe pop up on my yahoo page. Made it for my self . It was amazing. Then I tripled it for 12 added in all the chicken pieces.. Made extra sauce added extra spinach and served it over pasta for a family gathering. Now everybody asks for it when I visit. They ask what I call it .. Lemon butter chicken
I used chicken breasts (I was out of thighs), and it turned out great. I put the chicken and sauce on a bed of grilled asparagus, and topped it off with fresh parsley and pine nuts. I also added a small side of egg noodles, baguette bread and a glass of white wine. Super easy to make and delicious too. Going forward, this will be a go-to recipe!
I love this recipe. It is now a firm family favourite! Do NOT add flour to the chicken when browning Clare as it will burn and burned flour tastes really nasty. Thanks so much for the recipe Chungah.
I love this recipe, just as Chungah makes it! Thanks so much Chungah, it is a firm family favourite! Adding flour to the chicken before browning the chicken results in the flour burning, giving a nasty burned bitter taste. Not recommended.
OMG is this chicken yummy!!! I will be making this often. I did not have any thyme so for my first try it was without thyme and I used white pepper instead of black pepper. But let me tell you, it was so delicious!! This recipe is definitely a keeper!
My favorite chicken recipe!! I also love making this in the instant pot. The sauce is amazing and we serve over mashed potatoes. I always double the sauce because it so delicious! I like it off the plate soooo good! Highly recommend this!
Made this today, with the addition of my own garlic herb spice blend on the chicken ..before browning with the addition of the paprika! What a great smoky addition! I also added two tablespoons of cream cheese to thicken the sauce even more. Wish I could share a picture here they were quite beautiful! Thank u for sharing this great keeper recipe! Very KETO yum!
I made this lemon butter chicken today, but using bone-in breasts as that is what I had on hand. I followed the recipe otherwise, adjusting the cooking time accordingly; this dish was awesome and my family loved it. I will definitely be making this again. Thank you for this wonderful (and easy) recipe. And yes, you do want to eat the sauce with a spoon, it is that good!
Made this last night for dinner and it was beautiful . Flavour spot on. I did not have spinach but served with steamed broccoli. I would go as far to say this is the best chicken recipe I have tried on Pinterest, and so easy. Many thanks
I just made this tonight for my parents and in-laws. It was really good! I made a combination of chicken breast and chicken thighs. I think the chicken breast really soaks up the sauce well because it was very juicy and tender. Bravo on a fabulous recipe!
In its purest form, Butter Chicken consists of chunks of chicken marinated in a yogurt-and-spice mixture. The chicken gets simmered in a luxuriously creamy sauce comprising tomatoes, aromatics, a wealth of spices, and butter. This dish differs from Tikka Masala in that its more creamy than spicy, however Butter Chicken can still pack a fiery punch.
This is an amazing recipe! We have this on regular rotation at our house. I only made a couple of modifications, using vegan butter and coconut milk to make it vegan and adding some asafoetida and mustard seeds. I've never had butter chicken, but it's rather have this anyway! Thank you for sharing!!!
This hearty pumpkin curry is an autumnal twist on a classic butter chicken. Pumpkin puree replaces heavy cream for a lighter, healthier, but just as hearty curry. Diced chicken pieces marinate in a spiced yogurt marinade before browned and then cooked fully in a thick and warming sauce.
If you wanted butter chicken at lunch you had to beat the lunch hour rush. Everyone in town knew this was the place to get butter chicken. The sauce was so creamy with a hint of sweetness. Loaded with tender pieces of chicken simmered until fork tender.
It took me weeks to perfect my butter chicken recipe. I wanted it to be creamy, sweet, a bit spicy and heart warming. When I have butter chicken my spirits are immediately lifted. There is something so special about this warm cozy meal simply served with rice and naan bread that can brighten my day and warm my heart.
You may also be surprised that this curry dish does not actually contain curry powder. Curry is just the term for a dish that contains a blend of spices, some of which do contain curry powder, but butter chicken does not. Do not let the term curry steer you away from trying this classic dish!
Butter chicken is traditionally know as Makhani, originating in Northern India is 1948. This delicious chicken dish was created by Kundan Lal Gujral. The chicken is cooked in a smooth, velvet 'butter gravy' which makes the cuts of chicken used, extra tender and moist. The addition of cream gives the sauce a silky finish. Butter chicken is similar to chicken tikka masala. It is a slightly sweet curry.
Butter chicken is perfect simply paired with pilau rice (opens in new tab) and naan bread (opens in new tab). Of course, if you want to make this an even more indulgent meal opt for serving with saag aloo (opens in new tab), homemade Peshwari naan (opens in new tab), or with a side of onion bhajis using our classic onion bhaji recipe (opens in new tab), perfect for dipping into the sauce.
For the best flavour, texture, and quality, butter chicken is best cooked and eaten on the same day. However, if you have leftovers or you want to bulk cook this meal, you can easily freeze leftovers by storing them in an airtight container (freezer safe) for up to three months. Make sure the chicken is completely cooled before putting it in the freezer.
I should have read the comments before I made it! Next time will also reduce the speed to avoid shredded chicken. Was my first chicken dish in thermi (had it less than a week) so still learning all the tricks! Made naan as well. Great recipe- really enjoyed it. For next time, how much ginger do you use?
Thank you for this recipe, I really enjoyed it! My 2yo asked for more! I left it on speed 1 as per comments below and had minimal shredding of chicken. You may want to add ginger to your ingredients list as it seems to be missing. Great flavour my waistline thanks you!
I ended up with shredded chicken too, but it was still yummy. Only problem I had was ginger is not listed in the ingredients and I didnt look through the recipe when shopping.... so I made it without ginger.
Fantastic recipe! Just made it tonight and was very impressed with the flavour and consistency despite the lack of "unhealthy" ingredients. The chicken does get a bit hacked up, but I found this to be a bonus with two small kids, who sometimes find chewing a bit laborious. Definite winner. Thanks for posting.
Delicious and healthy recipe. Only problem I had was the chicken became so tender that it was pretty much shredded after the cooking time. It was still super tasty though and I will make again. Thanks for sharing. 2b1af7f3a8
