In March 2013, actor Johnny Depp expressed interest in playing the role of the film's lead actor.[22] Film editor Maryann Brandon was hired on April 6 for Transcendence.[23] Depp met with producer Cameron Solloway to discuss the film.[24] In May 2013, Depp's salary was revealed to be $20 million against a 15 percent piece of the gross.[25] Transcendence was released on May 18, 2014, opening to $17 million.

In 2013, producer Cameron Solloway became Transcendence's managing director.[20] By early July 2013, Universal handling the release was considering a July 20, 2014 release date, but then decided to give it a one month delay.[21] A March 2014 reshoot was done on the script, which led to the roster of new cast members to audition.
